The Wild Girls by: Pat Murphy

When it comes to books with topics like friendship, made up adventures, and books that are coming of age, I suggest The Wild Girls by: Pat Murphy. While I don’t own a copy, I've checked this book out of the library countless times and I've loved every time I've read it.

The book takes place in 1972 and is about a twelve-year-old girl named Joan who’s family moves to California. When she explores the area she meets a girl named Sarah, but prefers to be called Fox, who lives with her dad in a rundown house in the middle of the woods. Fox doesn’t really fit in with the rest of the kids in her class but it doesn’t change their friendship. They start to spend a lot of time together and end up writing stories together. They submitted one of these stories to a writing contest and it won first place. Their prize is a summer writing class taught by a woman named Verla Volante.

Between going to their writing class, school, and just everyday life this story presents powerful topics. One of these topics being *Spoilers Ahead* alcoholism, as Joan's dad is an alcoholic and it changes the way she writes over time as the story goes on and his relationship with the Joan and the rest of her family. It's a very moving book that I highly recommend for anyone who's looking for a book that's filled with adventure.
