Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer

I read this book a couple of summers ago and I was originally reading this book because I had watched the movie version and my friends told me the book was better. The movie was a really well done visual of the futuristic technologies of the book but lacked so many details that was in the book. I recommend reading the book but if you would like a visual representation, the movie does a fantastic job of that.

This book is a fantasy kind of mystery fiction novel that brings you through the underground world full of fairies and trolls. Artemis Fowl is a 12 year old criminal mastermind who lives with his butler in Fowl manor. His family can be described as mafias that are holding secrets of this underground society. Artemis discoveres The Book of the People and plans to get gold from the leprechauns by kidnapping a fairy, Holly Short. She is a member of the LEP which stands for Lower Element Police. After threatening the LEP to get Holly back in trade of gold, the fairies decide to throw a time freeze bomb around Fowl manor and a bio-bomb, which is supposed to kill the humans but Artemis escapes both bombs by some fate and ingenuity. After all the attempts to get Holly back, the LEP decided to let in a giant troll into the time bubble that froze time to try to kill Artemis. Even this failed and they were defeated which led them to finally give Artemis the gold that he wanted.

I did enjoy reading this book but as someone who isn't really into reading fantasy, it wasn't my favorite book. To me, everything became a little confusing when the book started to go back and forth between worlds. Especially when the time freezing and transportation came into the story, it only made it more confusing to me. I only read the first book in the series because I didn't feel like the book was as intriguing for me. Even though I thought Artemis was a great character and it seemed really fascinating how a 12 year old could be so genius, I've never been into fantasy because to me it was unrealistic. Although I think if you haven't read this classic series and you enjoy fantasy, I highly recommend this novel!

Thanks for reading!

Helen

  1. I really like how you give an honest and thorough review of this book. The story sounds pretty unique with its combination of mafia, leprechauns, and trolls. Hopefully I can find this book and read it sometime.

  2. i like the honest opinion. In the book i like the idea of a sneeky 12 year old with the mafia. I found the movie pretty forgetable, but books like you said usally have more detail.
